Those in the policing profession often discuss service, sacrifice, and a commitment to the community. But behind every badge is a human being – a mother or father, a son or daughter, a friend and neighbor – who faces the same unexpected challenges that anyone might encounter. At the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, we have long taken pride in supporting one another like family. Yet there are moments when the needs of our members extend beyond what traditional resources can provide. That is where the Seminole County Sheriff Foundation steps in, and why its mission is so vital.

The Seminole County Sheriff Foundation is an independent nonprofit entity established to support the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office: sworn deputies, civilian staff, and their families during their most pressing and challenging times. Whether it’s a sudden illness, a catastrophic event, a death in the family, or an unforeseen financial hardship, the Foundation exists so that no one faces those challenges alone. It ensures that those who dedicate their lives to serving this community can count on help when they may need it most.

Throughout the year, the Foundation provides emergency financial assistance, wellness support, and resources that alleviate burdens, allowing our people to focus on healing, rebuilding, and moving forward. The impact of this work is often unseen by the public but felt deeply by the individuals and families who receive it. For them, it is far more than financial support; it is the reassurance that their agency and their community care about them on a personal level.

The Foundation’s origin is rooted in the compassion and leadership of longtime community supporters who have personally been impacted by law enforcement. Recognizing the unique pressures faced by law enforcement families, the Foundation Board envisioned a way to ensure that no member of the Sheriff’s Office would ever have to weather hardship alone. That passion and commitment laid the groundwork for what would become the Seminole County Sheriff Foundation, an organization built on service, generosity, and an unwavering belief in taking care of our own. Now, there are Sheriff Foundations for respective law enforcement agencies across Central Florida, including Orange County, the City of Orlando, and Osceola County.

The Foundation also strengthens our agency culture in powerful ways. When team members know they are supported, they are more resilient, more connected, and more able to respond to the needs of our residents with compassion and excellence. This type of support system contributes to healthier employees, stronger morale, and a unified organizational spirit that extends to every aspect of public service.

As Sheriff, I am proud of the Foundation’s dedication and the countless lives it has touched, as well as the friendships it provides to the nearly 1,400 members of our organization, including myself. But I am even more proud of the people it serves – the men and women who show up every day to safeguard our neighborhoods, respond in moments of crisis, and uphold the values that make Seminole County such a special place to call home. If you are ever looking to give to a charitable organization that supports the men and women of policing, know that the Seminole County Sheriff Foundation is genuinely making a positive impact on the lives of those who serve our community.

Sheriff Dennis M. Lemma, now in his 10th year leading the agency, is the 10th sheriff in the history of Seminole County. As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer, Sheriff Lemma directs the agency’s enforcement, investigative, correctional, judicial, juvenile, and support services.
