A Summer Camp Experience Unlike Any Other
Sheriff Dennis M. LemmaWith summer vacation well underway and a new school year on the horizon, we are enjoying another successful season of Camp SCSO. This unique summer camp program continues to demonstrate the power of partnership, mentorship, and community engagement.
Seventy campers are participating in our seven-week program, which is partnering with the YMCA of Central Florida for the first time. Together, we are providing local youth with a safe, structured, and enriching environment where they can learn, grow, build friendships, and create lasting memories throughout their summer break.
While many people think of summer camp as just a place for children to stay active while school is out, Camp SCSO is designed to be much more than that. Throughout the program, campers participate in a variety of educational, recreational, and character-building activities that encourage teamwork, leadership, communication, and personal responsibility. These experiences help young people develop confidence and resilience while having fun and making meaningful connections with their peers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Camp SCSO is the opportunity it provides for positive interaction between youth and members of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. Throughout the program, campers have the chance to meet deputies, learn about specialized units, explore public safety equipment, and gain firsthand insight into the many ways law enforcement serves our community.
The People Behind the Badge
These experiences are important because they help build relationships and trust. When young people engage with deputies in a positive environment, they begin to see the people behind the badge. They discover that law enforcement officers are not only protectors but also mentors, coaches, parents, and neighbors who genuinely care about the well-being of our community.
At the same time, our deputies have the opportunity to connect with the next generation and help inspire future leaders.
Programs such as Camp SCSO also provide an important reminder that public safety extends beyond responding to calls for service. It includes prevention, education, mentorship, and creating opportunities for positive engagement. Investing in our youth today helps strengthen our community for years to come.
The success of this year’s Camp SCSO would not be possible without our valued partnership with the YMCA of Central Florida. The Y’s commitment to youth development and family engagement aligns perfectly with our mission to serve and support the residents of Seminole County. Together, we can provide an experience that benefits not only campers but also their families and the community as a whole.
I am also grateful for the deputies, staff members, YMCA team members, and volunteers who are dedicating their time and energy to making the camp a success. Their enthusiasm and commitment are creating an environment where children feel welcomed, encouraged, and supported every day.
Camp SCSO is more than a summer program; it is an investment in relationships, character development, and the future of our community. The friendships formed, lessons learned, and positive experiences shared will continue to have an impact long after the final day of camp.
When policing professionals, community organizations, and families work together, we create opportunities that help young people thrive. This camp is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through those partnerships, and we look forward to continuing that work in the years ahead.
